Student art contest winners announced

Student artists in San Marcos were recognized during National Planning Month for showing the places that make their community meaningful. The city of San Marcos Development Services Department held a student art contest titled My Favorite Place in San Marcos, bringing residents together with board and commission members involved in local development.
San Marcos Airport Featured in Winning Artwork
Taking first place was Hernandez fourth-grader Ryan Sean Metcalf for his rendition of the San Marcos Airport. Mendez fifth-grader Araceli Castillo took second place with her drawing of Rio Vista, and Hernandez fourth-grader Harrison Mayhew placed third with his drawing of the San Marcos Fire Station.
Honorable Mention Recipients
- Elena Francis, a Hernandez Elementary first-grader, for her rendition of the San Marcos Public Library.
- Aliz Garces-Galindo, a Mendez fourth-grader, for her drawing of Sunset Bowling Lanes.
- Exetvan Cervantes, a Mendez third-grader, for his version of Wonder World Cave.
Community Recognition
All of the recognized students were taught by Kay Posey, who teaches art at both Mendez and Hernandez Elementary schools. The winning artwork was displayed at the San Marcos Activity Center on Nov. 8.

The contest highlighted how young residents see local landmarks, public spaces, and aviation facilities as part of the San Marcos community. Including the San Marcos Airport among the winning subjects shows how the airport is recognized not only as transportation infrastructure, but also as a familiar civic landmark.
